How Visualization Helps You Reach Your Goals & Live Out Your Dreams.

Have you ever been inspired or wanted to emulate characteristics of a friend, a character from a movie, a parent, or even just a random stranger?

Same here. I often find myself watching a movie and thinking, “I want to dress like them” or “so-and-so is so classy and put together” or “Wow, she really commands the boardroom” or “my mom is so organized and always has a plan of attack.” I love movies and television shows, especially when they feature characters who embody the qualities I aspire to have in my own life. It's important to note that this isn't about comparing myself to others, but rather about drawing inspiration to make positive changes in my life.

Research has shown that visualization can help you attain and embody the characteristics you admire. When you imagine yourself exhibiting these traits, your brain acknowledges that you can become what you envision. It becomes real empowering a sense of confidence. You can control how you enter a room, how you act, the energy you attract, what you wear, your posture, your mindset, your tone of voice, your energy level, taking the steps required to reach your goals, and more.

Throughout my gymnastics career, I frequently used visualization. I would mentally rehearse my routines, focusing on when and where to breathe, the flips I would perform, how I would land, and where I would look in the crowd. This mental practice gave me a plan and taught my brain that I had already experienced the routine, making the actual performance more confident. The more you repeat something, the more it becomes a habit and a concrete routine.

But don't just take my word for it. It's crucial to back up what I'm sharing with scientific data and research. The Self-Help Library features an article, “The Role of Visualization in Achieving Success According to Brian Tracy,” which delves into the insights of Brian Tracy, a renowned motivational speaker, best-selling author, and personal development expert. In this article, Tracy explains the science behind visualization:

  • Neurological Impact: When you visualize, your brain uses the same pathways as it does during real actions. This helps your brain practice and improve the tasks needed to reach your goals.

  • Psychological Impact: Imagining yourself succeeding boosts your confidence and lowers stress. By mentally experiencing success, you become more equipped to manage it in real life.

  • Behavioral Impact: Visualizing your goals creates a positive outlook, making you more confident. This confidence encourages you to take actions that bring your goals within reach.

I encourage you to read the full article if this topic interests you. Tracy provides practical steps on how to start visualizing, the do’s and don’ts of visualization, and other tools to help you implement visualization effectively.

As Tracy suggests, when you visualize, act “as if” you have already achieved your goals. This mindset often changes your actions and decisions to align with your desired outcome.
